It is an interesting concept. Practice interviews.  Its not unlike practicing having teeth pulled or limbs ripped off or practicing hunger or deprivation .  Practice interviews and interviewing can be similar to “dress rehearsals”  or football practice.  You might try or wish to fine tune your answers to questions or work on your abilities to maintain a condition of aliveness.  You may need to try one one i f  you have not figured out what your next “bottom  line”  salary minimum is or should be.

Practice interviews can range from going to people to people in your field for advice to actually pursuing job interviews.  Either way will show you how to put your efforts and road map into practice before tackling the “real thing”.

But get all your practicing down long before you show up for your important job interviews.  Those are the ones that you want to crack wide open.

2) Hire a temporary worker to do your job for you. Alternatively if you can figure out how to do this for your boss – so that they discover how little he does in his job.

3)Have all ( or most ) of his correspondence sent out by Fed Ex. This is best done to international contacts as well. An “opening fee” for customs is charged to the recipients ( often on their credit cards without their approval)

4) Send blank pieces of paper via internal or external mail to recipients. Marked these packages “Urgent” or “Confidential and Most Private” or “For Immediate Action”

The return address of course is your boss

This can be done with the Fed Ex ploy above as well – to create maximal effects

An alternate viewpoint of this strategy is to send out his latest or an older ( redated) 15 page memo with an odd assortment of pages missing.

5 ) Replace a commonly used form on the office computer network with a photo chosen from the boss’s favorite collection –

his kids , a fishing photo , or best a photo of his girlfriend , mistress or at the worst any women ( or man) along with his ( or her) name or other identifying criteria

It seems as if the greater the physical confinement the larger the imaginative space grows. Works such as “Pilgrim’s Promise” was written in prison. Alexander Solzenitsyn wrote his major efforts “The Gulag Archipeligo” was written in prison even despite the fact that he was allowed no paper. He wrote in his head and memorized what he wrote. Prison did strip him of most things but not his will , his passions and dreams and his imagination.

You need not be a writer to use work time creatively.

Among the beneficiaries of my boring job at Acer Stup Kirk Aircraft were a group of junior boys that I had taught at Sunday school. It takes some planning to keep one step ahead of fourth to six grade boys and even more to exert a genuine spiritual influence on them. Much of my lesson preparation took place at work.

Similarly during my ditch digging days our church , having moved to a new location , need someone to spearhead a neighborhood outreach. I composed as survey we could use to find out more about people. mapped out our approach , and as well devised an integrated , simple yet comprehensive record keeping system of new contacts – all in my head. The pastor and board liked and were enthusiastic about the plan. A few weeks later , our members were canvassing the neighborhood, meeting our neighbors letting them know that we cared and building a card file and database of names.

A more challenging job would not have freed me to brainstorm the church visitation program.

The worker on an assembly line operates as an automatic pilot collecting a pay check and paying his or her mortgage. Let them export these jobs as outsourcing to China or India. Never the less , you can always take what is the worst aspect of your job humdrum and turn it into a benefit. Lemons into lemonade. Take advantage of those eight hours a day when your mind runs idle. Those hours can do double duty for you. You can get paid for your physical labor or presence on the job while engaging in your own mental pursuits.

When people asked where I was employed I answered “None of your Business” hoping that I might not have to tell them the truth , and the tales of terribly abusive management and poor working conditions. So much for labor law. Since then I have found that “A real job”, or “Real Men’s Work” can be just as tedious and / or boring.

Digging ditches as well is boring and hard labor. Long haul semi-truck driving can be boring too – especially if all you see if a freeway and no scenery. It seems that you are always on a clock trying to meet deadlines and “Just in Time” deadlines. Then there is cooking and washing dishes in a diner. Or putting data in a computer. The list of potentially boring jobs and stupid managers and supervisors to go with it goes on and on , almost forever.

Sometimes a terrible boring job with a more terrible boss , manager or supervisor can be turned around , sometimes not. It is said that ” attitude is everything” . Some of the time it is. Some of the time it is a lost cause. Now you understand the popularity of illicit drugs and alcohol. It can only be mind over matter to a point. If the stimulus continues to bother you , Laddie its time to turn off the tv and leave the room.

At one point in my life I spent many eight hour shifts doing nothing but cutting wing slots in the sticks that became the fuselages of windup , rubber powered toy airplanes. In many cases now , outsourcing to China, India , Vietnam or the Phillipines can be considered a great and wonderful event for the American worker.

Far worse was a day of picking up those same dyed sticks out of a jumbled heap and arranging them neatly ( or not so neatly) in boxes. I did my share of that as well. Not only was it mind numbing and boring m but the dye and the dust got all over my hands and arms, made me itch – in the end , since I had only been employed at this wonderful workplace to short a time for health insurance coverage. To add insult , to injury , not only was I bored to death at ” this wonderful job and place of employment” , had abusive managers but also had to pay for the cost of medical treatment by a dermatologist as well.
