The point of this post is how time , the Washington “Beltway” and ultimately power – change a person’s views and values – and ultimately their values and how they conduct themselves in their lives.

In that book the story is told of young Mr. Biden visiting Moscow and being placed in full meeting mode with the polished statesman – Eduard Shevardnadze
At that point in time America and its cold war adversary – the U.S.S.R. were involved in the “START” Strategic Nuclear Arms Reduction Treaty. The negotiations were at an impasse in the US Senate and stalled over what might be seen as a most minor sticking point.

The treaty had reached an impasse in the senate and the young Mr. Biden just happened to be in Moscow at that time. Mr. Biden made a courtesy call to Eduard Shevardnadze et all, with the American ambassador to the USSR accompanying. The polished Russian statesman proudly announced “Mr. Biden I speak for my side and you speak for yours” – to which the US Ambassador gulped.

Fine said Biden – to which his Russian compatriot launched into a long tirade as to how the USA had always placed the USSR ( most unfairly according to him) in the role of poor , disadvantaged sister.
The expectation was that Mr. Biden would react most negatively in this situation , jumping to the defense of the US and its negotiation position and positions.

Yet amazingly , according to this 1986 respected book on negotiation tactics , skills and procedures – Mr. Biden thanked the Russian for elaborating and explaining a viewpoint that he never been explained and that he was most grateful to be present , hear and have elaborated. He then as the book explained “went around the table” , in effect asking Mr. Shevardnadze how to deal with the sticking points and viewpoints of the various personalities in the US Senate who represented the concerns that were holding up and stalling the process. The point is that at some point , Mr. Shevardnadze too realized the other side , their concerns & the vital importance of the treaties culmination and fulfillment to his side as well.

Out of the apparent blue, he raised his hands and waved “You can have your sticking point”.

Contrast that procedure and polished practice by Mr. Biden by this demonstration in 2011 by a sitting US Vice-President.

What to do ?  The first answer is to be polite and perhaps even deferential.  After all the person may have a better reason for being there – that is often than a case of “management on the brain” or hero worship. Perhaps they are supporting their sick mother or dog , and they need the money to support the family or these “causes”.

All in all , its best to be quiet . Polite   Get the interview over quickly. Leave.  Never think about such foolish and stupid things again.

You think you have a heavy workload? Try working 16 hour days, 7 days a week, in a poorly ventilated factory. You’re not allowed any bathroom breaks, and if you make a mistake, you get fired. Which won’t really affect your standard of living, because your pay cheque consists of half a loaf of burnt bread. (If you’re really lucky).

Hate the fact that you spend so many hours on the road? Hey, at least you’re in a car. Not wandering dank forests on foot, constantly looking over your shoulder for traces of wild, hungry animals that want to devour you for dinner. And even though the office budgets mean that you have to fly economy, it’s still a heck of a lot better than the conditions of a sailing galley. You aren’t shackled to your seats, and no matter how bad the airline food is, at least it’s not infested with maggots. (Except of course on Karter Ultra-Budget Airlines – where they charge extra for the maggots).

Are you dealing with difficult co-workers, who refuse to follow your instructions and grumble when you ask them to meet deadlines? At least they’re not stoning you to death, feeding you to lions, or plotting with the people from the Accounting Department on how they can convince your boss to serve your head on a silver platter.

Retirement package not up to your standard? Be thankful you can even look forward to retirement. For some people, they’re lucky to be alive at the end of the day, what with charging bulls or the risk of falling four stories down a rickety chimney.

Your job isn’t as bad as you think. Not completely crap! There are many jobs out there that are much, much worse.

Some excuse that is.

Not unlike the old parable your father or grandmother told you of 10 people who cannot swim jump off a bridge into the river.

You cannot swim either – do you jump off the bridge like the other fools and malcontents ?>?
