Sent an inappropriate e-mail, or replied-to-all comments on an e-mail that you received which you thought was just going to one person … or, said something inappropriate in an IM which popped up on a web conference?Yes

what happened?

I once accidentally replied-to-all on a message that had been a “me too” response that replied to all on a company-wide e-mail, telling the sender to stop replying to all, with just a little more anger showing that was necessary. It was hugely embarrassing.<

Put down a co-workers to someone else, only to have it get back to him or her? Not in a long

I don’t recall.Contradicted the boss in public?Yes

what happened? I’m pretty well known for sitting down front at company wide meetings, and a while back I used to be known for commenting on the big boss’s misstatements. He took it very gracefully, and it got to be a joke. These days, I usually challenge the big guys at company wide meetings to tough questions, rather than correcting their mistakes. Committed a social blunder at a company event? Not that I recall

What happened? I don’t recall.

Burned a bridge when you resigned? Yes, twice.

What happened?

In one instance, I told them I’d rather be unemployed than work for them. Within 6 months, they were trying to avoid jail-time, and I had been only unemployed for about two weeks.

In the second instance, I told my boss, and the VP of the division that I was tired of being right, I just wanted to be listened too. Within a year, both of them were looking for other work as well.

The next general form of options available to you “on the job” involves compromise and the art of compromising. In some cultures – most well known the Japanese – conflict is to avoided at all times , conflict is a major taboo and sin – hence most decisions and actions are based on a compromise . On the other extreme occurs when dealing with those where there is at all times a pathological fear of failure , an abject ability to admit one is ever wrong, and coupled with the two previous traits the need to both control others and view any other co-workers who are either competent , have good ideas or suggestions as a direct threat to that person’s job and status within that industry or employment. Guess in what category most managers fall ? If your manager does not , count yourself most fortunate and lucky in life.

In cases of compromise do what you can to be a good influence. This may occur even though you may find that you to continually put up with some things , places or events that you may feel are your about your job. It can be best said- welcome to life.

Getting fired is a horrible experience, but getting fired when you didn’t even see it coming is something truly shocking. If you’re guilty of any of the following five workplace no nos, you could very well find yourself on the outside looking in. The following situations and scenarios were either taken from my personal life, or folks I have worked with or known over the years.

1.) The Office Romance: No boss likes dealing with the office romance. They are a distraction to the workplace and other employees. Most large companies (especially large US retail chains) officially forbid them. Back in the days when I was a young store detective for a major department store, I was secretly dating my future wife, who worked at the customer service desk. Well, we thought it was a secret, until my boss called me into the office and asked. “Which one of you would like to leave?” I was surprised, as this was an extremely low key romance. Apparently, I had signed off on a no fraternization policy. We were both able to retain our jobs my my accepting a transfer to another store. A company isn’t too concerned about workplace love when it’s going well. But hates it when it goes bad. Be careful and stay out of the Copy Room, you two!

2.) You’re Too Old For Your Job Description: Are you 40 and still working french fries? If you’ve become older and your co-workers are getting younger, that means you haven’t progressed within the company. If you’ve out-aged yourself without showing any desire to move ahead in the company, you could find yourself without a gig. Especially these days. If you don’t set goals and move ahead, why should the boss keep you around? Your company could probably hire two people for the price they’re paying you to remain stagnant. Even though it is illegal in the US to fire someone because of their age, we all know that there are ways around the rules. Maybe your boss will start keeping a careful eye on your tardiness. “I’m sorry, Bill. You’ve been late 3 times this month. We know you’ve got 4 kids and a mortgage, but we’re going to have to let you go.”

3.) You’ve Outgrown Your Position: Remember Dean Wormer’s words to Flounder in the movie, Animal House? “Fat, Lazy and Stupid is no way to go through life” Although you may not be lazy or stupid, overweight people have told me in the past how tough it is for them to get hired. I’ve never had to deal with the issue, but I’m assuming that weight discrimination is rampant. An overweight woman I worked with years ago told me that she had to take less of a job because of her weight issues. She was college educated in the secretarial field (with more than adequate computer skills for the time period) and couldn’t seem to find a decent job anywhere. She had been passed up for countless reception-type jobs where younger, more attractive (and skinny) women were hired. She told me that she had been informed by a friend of hers who worked in a huge ad firm, that “good looking women” were hired for these types of jobs because “they made a good impression on clients, visitors and bigwigs.” Now, this was second hand information to me, but I wouldn’t doubt it happens everyday in corporate America.

4.) You’re Sick And Can’t Shut Up About It: Got cancer? Shut your mouth. Got a disease? AIDS? Shut your mouth and don’t tell a soul at work. Workplace gossip (or your own BIG mouth) could place your job and your health insurance in jeopardy. Your company doesn’t need a liability. You being sick is a liability. Time out of work for medical treatments and increased insurance premiums are just two of several reasons your company doesn’t need a sick person working for them.

5.) You’re Burnt Out And You Don’t Care Who Knows It: If your negative attitude and constant I don’t give a crap complaining to your co-workers goes on too long, you might as well kiss your job goodbye. Co-workers will only listen to you for so long before the boss gets wind of your bad attitude. Negative ranting is a workplace disease and no boss (no decent one, anyway), wants his people infected. If you’re burnt out, you already know it. Get a new job as soon as possible or you’ll find yourself put out. If you can’t find a job right away, at least quit your complaining until you find one.

When you’re in a job that makes you unhappy, it can be easy to start thinking about making a move elsewhere. Maybe the work’s not as fun any more, or you’re not advancing when you should be. While there are plenty of good reasons to leave, there’s one that shouldn’t enter your mind: Not liking the people you work with, even if it’s your boss.
It doesn’t seem like something you’re likely to be able to get past. You deal with them every day. But don’t think that you can go to a new job that will be jerk-free.
The jerks of the world follow you around. Remember how there were people in school you didn’t like? And then in college there were people just like them? And then your first job, you get a new set of people, most of whom you like, but some are jerks, too? They are everywhere. What’s more, they move around. You can be in a perfectly swell department, with a great boss and great co-workers, and out of the middle of nowhere – some horrible racist comment or worse! In comes some socially stunted goober that screws it all up. Or who can’t code his way out of a paper sack. Or maybe your boss decides to take off and gets replaced by some micromanager who calls you Imagine working at a worse place. Yes it can get worse. Imagine you are working as a slave at Bosh Auto. Never get paid. Labor board sides against you. Or you have 27 years at Chrysler – a union guy – you come off of disability, 1 year to go for pension. Company screws you.Union screws you – tells you to shove off, Lawyer screws you – instead of the 60 % he bargains down to 40 %. You have to sell you house and van. Bank will not give you a loan as the mortgage, taxes and hydro take all. Wally ” everyone f…. me “!!It’s not that so much that Michael Scott is a terrible boss, but that he’s allowed to keep his job in the face of his egregious shortcomings. Michael has problems, but the company doesn’t care, or doesn’t seem to care. You take pride in your work, but why doesn’t the company show the same pride?
<the distinction between the bad co-workers and the company that allows them to work is an important one. The bad co-worker or bad boss may go away over time, but the company is a larger problem that may be well entrenched. Before you make for the door, make sure you know what the problem actually is. If it's just a person or two that rub you wrong, you're probably better off to live with it for a while until things change.

No matter how awful your boss is, at least he doesn’t chop off your head when you do something wrong. Nor does he ask you to wade through the sewers, handle entrails and offal, or stick your arm into the warm, cavernous bowels of large farm animals.

You think you have a heavy workload? Try working 16 hour days, 7 days a week, in a poorly ventilated factory. You’re not allowed any bathroom breaks, and if you make a mistake, you get fired. Which won’t really affect your standard of living, because your pay cheque consists of half a loaf of burnt bread. (If you’re really lucky).

Hate the fact that you spend so many hours on the road? Hey, at least you’re in a car. Not wandering dank forests on foot, constantly looking over your shoulder for traces of wild, hungry animals that want to devour you for dinner. And even though the office budgets mean that you have to fly economy, it’s still a heck of a lot better than the conditions of a sailing galley. You aren’t shackled to your seats, and no matter how bad the airline food is, at least it’s not infested with maggots. (Except of course on Karter Ultra-Budget Airlines – where they charge extra for the maggots).

Are you dealing with difficult co-workers, who refuse to follow your instructions and grumble when you ask them to meet deadlines? At least they’re not stoning you to death, feeding you to lions, or plotting with the people from the Accounting Department on how they can convince your boss to serve your head on a silver platter.

Retirement package not up to your standard? Be thankful you can even look forward to retirement. For some people, they’re lucky to be alive at the end of the day, what with charging bulls or the risk of falling four stories down a rickety chimney.

Your job isn’t as bad as you think. Not completely crap! There are many jobs out there that are much, much worse.

Some excuse that is.

Not unlike the old parable your father or grandmother told you of 10 people who cannot swim jump off a bridge into the river.

You cannot swim either – do you jump off the bridge like the other fools and malcontents ?>?
