Jerk Bosses I Have Known | Fire Your Boss or Supervisor

You may well have received such instructions from  “Head Office “  – Perks Central

It is an amazing fact of life ….rah …. rah .. rah that perks and power trips come first and foremost

If people are “no longer with the company”  it is often is not usually in the form of a power trip.  The concepts of what productivity and results these personalities brought to firm are seldom discussed or noted .   Never mind as well the investment in time , energies and “Management Time ” ( and expense was involved)

Its a case of the rules are golden – we are here to discuss and be open minded t0 what we want…….  I am the boss

Here is one example of the mindset :

General Guidelines for Contributions:

Although the company’s contribution  program  will be administered in a flexible manner in response to changing community needs, the general guidelines below will apply:

1) The company prefers to focus its giving though significant  contributions ( in excess of x $ dollars) to key organizations rather than to numerous smaller contributions to many organizations

2)Contributions  are limited to nonprofit organizations  exempt from taxation under the Internal Revenue Code and Codes

3) All recipients will operate their programs  according to equal opportunity objectives

4) Commitments should generally not exceed three years to assure the company’s flexibility  to changing needs

5) Requests / proposals for funding  should be submitted during the second quarter of the year preceding funding

6) All solicitation made by phone  verbally should be verified in writiting

The amazing part that with all of these rules and guidelines how many times management will simply sabotage efforts on the “front lines” when it comes to short sighted – almost knee jerk reactions , poorly thought out or through, when it comes to funding to important customers that is arbitrarily changed and reneged upon . Lol lots of laughs.

The Universal Soldier

Here is a tale of woe in the “Civil Service”  oft called “Silly Service”  aka “Silly Servants”
President Obama wants to increase the ranks of these highly productive workers and yet in Canada it is reported that the biggest health crisis of all is “depression among civil servants”

75 % of the executives in these ” high positions  and jobs”   say they are on the verge of burnout or suffering from extreme fatigue.

Disability claims among these government workers as a whole are climbing with 30 to 40 % estimated to be for depression.  Indeed mental health claims doubled between the years 1997 and 2007 and now account for fully 45 %  of all claims.

What could be the reason for these problems in paradise ?

What is stated by the participants is that there is a quandary of meetings , distractions and more meetings, ultimately with no one in charge.

Go figure !  One might of thought that it was only in the private sector that one would have these problems.  The civil service is generally regarded as a low stress , but stable job.  On top of that add in unions , the power of union grievances as protection and ultimately early and lucrative pensions

Government workers generally hide behind the power of facade of government – the “crown ” in Canada . “Crown Corporations ” even though allegedly privatized , can not be held liable for their actions or damages.

So what is the problem ? “What’s the frequency Kenneth ?” .  If you cannot stand the heat get out of the kitchen.  Or is it too cushy and you are afraid to “get a real job”.

The universal soldier.

Write Me a Memo

Some interesting points for management on “how to send a memo”

It might be said that the purpose of a memo often is to show staff  “who is boss” or alternatively put to make an appearance to either pretend that the writer is around important  or is around or in the limelight

In many cases   ( if not most) , the writer of the memo should either of stayed in bed or followed the adage – attributed to Abraham Lincoln that it is better to keep one’s mouth shut and have people think that you are an idiot rather than open one’s mouth and reaffirm this. (paraphrased)

Here are some points and pointers for writing a memo dealing with “legal opinions”.  Follow these and check out , as well as verify if any of  the current memos that you have received or been the victim of have followed these rules and precepts ?

Remember the adage “I am the Boss and the rule are mine”

Its not all unlike a two year old holding in their bowel movements as a show of force

1) Don’t lapse into gibberish intelligible only to your occupational species

2) Don’t write in the abstract to “Everyman”".  Picture your readers and write to them as you would explain the situation for their specific applications

3) Don’t bury important ideas in long sentences and paragraphs

4) Don’t simply restate a law or the contract’s wording.  Make application to the question at hand

5) Don’t make the reader look elsewhere for contract details to understand the basic message

6) Lastly do not be wordy.  Cut the legalisms from your memo;  redundant synonyms ( last will and testament, maintenance and upkeep, null and void):  ready made subject introductions that could fit into any number of opinions on the same subject matter , unnecessary quotes that you could paraphrase, formal -isms  ( party of the first party) ,   plain old everyday repitition

The list goes on and on

Ultimately it must be always remembered and noted – most memos are seldom read or at the best given one short cursory look over

It is as if the person the person who writes the memo does so to hear themselves “talk”  not to make any valid or useful point or add value to the conversation or to the world

In the Final Analysis

In the final analysis , when the game is over and done so to speak you are your own boss.

Your raises , your promotions , bonuses , professional and personal integrity and honor are yours and yours only

Ted Stevens you have no one to blame but yourself.  Put or shut up with these morons and management wannabees.  Simple as that.

The tale is told of one “screw up” who went through life blaming others .  No matter what “the world f…. me” Through good jobs – he was going to teach multinational companies ” a lesson” , through his union ,  through the IRS tax department, through the banks who in the end had to seize his house with its carefully tended lawn, finally down to the low priced lawyer he hired on a recommendation from an acquaintance in fish and chip shop to finally the real estate agent who had sold his home.

All self destructive behavior to no avail and no good reason what so ever by any means.  It appears to have been subconscious ploy to win the attention of a long gone parental figure – his father , from whom he never received the love and recognition he so much wanted and desired

What of a waste of a human being on this planet earth

An interesting case of the huff and puff of William Faulkner’s “The Sound and the Fury”  when in the end it all means nothing

Recently at a local auto dealership a sequence of events happened

First email stops. It turns out that an IT tech is called in.  The sales department is not getting email from the high powered online application form.  The computer and Outlook Express log on check out.  It worked before .  Passwords had not been changed on the Outlook Express nor email settings.  The IT tech determines that the issue must be on the “server side”

All is forgotten until Monday after the weekend when the tech is called again in a panic.  First its no email.  Next its no website.

It turns out the web host was not renewed. No one on top of that knew particulars – host , log on etc.

Once the host was up still no email nor website on the internet.  DNS Queries and Google Yahoo searches are blank.

The owner of the place keeps going back to Google checking like a dog looking for a lost bone under the blanket expecting his website to magically appear

It turns out that the domain name  had not been renewed either , had lapsed and was in a suspended mode

Again no clear cut lines of authority , records or delegation

What a foolish waste of time and energies

You may well have heard the phrase bantered around “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs’ or roughly translated girls go to Clear Lake to find a boyfriend and guys …..
Or put another way “Paradigm shift’ as quoted by the management consultant Harold Howden – “at the sales meeting all of these suits were repeating the phrase “”Paradigm Shift”….. I had no idea what they meant….. you mean its like the farmer’s wife who kissed the cow because she wanted to ”

To a large degree , good communication requires mutual understanding a two way street. and adequate information about the subjects on hand involved. Lol when it comes to your boss. His only concern may be in getting into the customer’s pants.

Empathy ? Forget that.

Empathy means in general situating yourself to understand a situation. Communication has to improve to the degree that a person can see, sense and fully “feel” what the other person is seeing , comprehending or understanding. Lots of luck when you have a closed mind , that is all about power and inflicting your own power over others.

The rules are golden and they are my rules

Ultimately intelligent and wise people learn in life that ultimately you can control very little in life – not even yourself to the greatest degree so don’t even try.
Yet many a boss , manager or supervisor has “died trying”
Reminds one of a slogan outside a live bait shop “Our bait will catch fish or die trying”
Hope that your boss does.

Its an amazing example to deal with “older ” people who wish to acquire computer skills.  The exercise illustrates previous “business models”  and mores of management.

One must remember that in North America’s heyday – after WW2 , women went “back into the kitchen”, after running the war output , industrial Europe was devastated.  North America had its pick of any of the best workers that Europe – Germany and the UK – England Scotland had to offer , and life went merrily along.

In the 60′s if you did not “like your job”  then walked away – and “just got another”

Try that procedure and policy on for size now

Still the interesting part is that with many older people who have come up with the conclusion that they want a computer – especially women with laptops as they are cute , a key factor that comes into play is the absolute disavowal of learning typing skills.  Even when asked “What do you want to do with your new computer ? ….. and it is best to learn to type otherwise how else are you going to use your new computer comes the horror of the request and then the emphatic put down statement “(Royal WE)  Do not want to learn to / will not / do not will not TYPE!” .  End of statement.

In seems all in all , in summary that in most business offices that the typist was the lowest form of life in the organization.  Thus no matter the benefits, no matter the basis of keyboard entry in the world of pcs and computers to many older persons computer data entry in the world of pcs shows all the previous prejudice in the world of management of the 1960′s ( if not today)

Had enough of the jerks or jerkettes ?   Its amazing how people don’t do the simplest things at all.  A person without savings is like a ship without a rudder ready to be tossed and turned by any and every storm of even wisp of wind coming their way

Have a reserve set of capital.  Its your tax so to say.  Veteran broadcaster Bill Oreilly was taught by his father to put away 15 % of each and every paycheck automatically without question.
“It is your TAX”  the father taught.   This way you have a reserve fund that if the times or place is not your liking you can “shove off”  or at least have options in your mind rather than shaking like a neurotic poodle

If not then begin saving money and capital today to help see you through the next phase of “your career”.  If nothing else the job at “the new/ next place”  may be entry level than your current position.    Its no secret that many bosses you get in life may increase pay just to make it hard for employees to leave – or at the least highly inconvenient

People it seems in 2010 seem to live to their means – if not 10 to 25 % more.   You can thank credit cards for that

Pay and a lifestyle are highly seductive it seems

Once you move on – your reduction in pay will be only temporary.  Being happier ( and healthier mentally) in your new place you should rocket up the productivity and pay scales no doubt.

Keep and develop a resource source of funds and capital .  Its fairly basic and standard.

All of this Will Pass

Remember in the end two phrases that are time tested “Time heals all” and “All things will pass”
Take great heed in the belief that in the end remember that that “this too will pass”. While you may indeed feel trapped in a job that you really hate right now – at this moment in time – take comfort that you will not be in this situation or place for ever ( or so you dearly hope)

Ultimately you are in charge of your career. Thus you can begin your job and career search and searches immediately for something and someone – that can only be better even if a marginal improvement and a host of improvements

Keep you chin up and upwards – keep a most positive outlook. Once you leave and move on ( as no doubt in your mind you will and must) it all will fade back into the past into oblivion. One big nightmare to be forgotten post haste
