Women in India
Contrasts between women and men in India
About 1/3 of the households are run by women alone because the men left the women to work in the city. And by the way, when a man and a woman have the same job, the woman gets much less money than the man. One thing that is important, too is that 2/3 of the women in India can’t read and write, but on the contrary 2/3 of the men can read and write!
In the evening some women are not allowed to sleep before their husband or other men in the household. Unlike the women the men can leave their wife.
Burning Brides
In India sometimes women are burned if their parents didn’t pay enough dowry when the girl got married. This is often called a”kitchen accident”, in 99% of these “kitchen accidents” a woman is murdered. 4000 women are burned every year
Indian widows
If a husband dies, his widow is always guilty, even if the man was a few years older. If the widow hasn’t got a son, the indian people think that the widow must die, too, because they are useless. As a widow she isn’t allowed to wear jewellery and the red circle on their forehead is called the „Bindi”. The red painting is called the „Sindoor”. The „Mangrustra” is a golden bracelett, it’s like the wedding ring in europe. And, last but not least, the „Sati” this is when the women are burned when they are still alive.

The marriage
The girls in India get married early. The parents of the girls want to get rid of them, so they start looking for a husband when she’s at the age of 8 years. They get married so early, because if they pass the teen ages it’s difficult to get them married. And one other reason is that the marriage costs much money. At the day of the marrige, most of the women see their husbands for the first time. When they get married the women have to promise to obey their husbands and take care of the parents in law. The main aim of the marriage is to get many sons because that is a blessing but getting many daughters is just like a curse. Many of the women are widowed early or they are singles because of their husbands who have deserted them.

Unintentional daughters
The best gift in a marriage is to get many sons and no daughters, because in India people think that daughters bring bad luck and the parents of the girl are worried because they have to pay a high dowry to the parents in law when their daughter gets married. If the wife doesn’t get any babys, the husband can leave his wife. One important thing is that the people don’t have contraception or sex education like in Europe! They also have contraception like condoms and pills, but if a woman gets any pills from the doctor often the man uses them because he thinks that the pills are useless on a woman. Also if a woman is pregnant and she knows that the baby will be a daughter many have an abortion.
